Lake Mary, FL (May 15, 2018) Seminole County’s School Board recognized Lake Howell High’s Latinos in Action (LIA) for their excellence in representing Seminole County this year. Lake Howell High is the first school in Seminole County to offer this unique course, which focuses on four pillars: leveraging personal and cultural assets, excelling in education, serving the community, and developing leadership skills. Each LIA student gains real-life leadership experience by participating in student-led service, social, and professional committees. During the 2017-2018 school year, LHHS students were paired with students at English Estates Elementary whom they mentored twice a week while providing literacy tutoring. This partnership aided all students in developing language proficiency as well as deepening their understanding of the value of being bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural. LHHS’s LIA was also awarded the Latinos in Action Rookie Group of the Year this March at the LIA National Conference.
