Attendance Policy & Instructions
SCPS has moved to Skyward Attendance requests.
Types of Absences:
- Medical: a medical appointment with official documentation signed by the doctor
- Court: a court appearance with an official document signed by the court
- Excused: a parent note for a missed day of school including family obligations; vacations and college visits
Ten (10) parent notes will be accepted per school year to excuse students’ absences that result from student illness.
Parents have a maximum of 7 days to submit a attendance note following their students return to school.
If a student exceeds ten absences in a school year, the only notes that will be accepted to excuse student absences are as follows:
- Medical treatment provided by a licensed health professional via an official document. This includes, but is not limited to, a doctor, orthodontist, dentist, chiropractor, psychologist, vision, etc.
- Law enforcement order or court subpoena via a subpoena document.
- Observance of religious practices or a religious holiday.
- Death of a family member via a death certificate, funeral program, obituary, etc.
Attendance Procedure:
Parents log into Parent Skyward Access and submit an attendance absence request.
- Excused Absence Request: Parent types in Skyward note and no further action is required.
- Medical/Court Absence Request: Parent types in Skyward note and then emails official documentation with the Student ID as the subject line to lhhs_attendance@scps.k12.fl.us.
Parents will receive an approval or denial when Lake Howell staff have reviewed the absence request.
Credit Denial:
Students who accumulate more than (9) unexcused absences in a class during a semester class may be denied credit. Loss of credit may interfere with the students’ ability to graduate on time. In order to reinstate credit students will need to successfully complete the terms of an attendance contract. Students may pick up contracts in the discipline office.
*Pursuant to Florida Statue 1003.436 credit will be DENIED in any course in which the student is absent a total of 20 or more days. This incudes ALL absences regardless of EXCUSED or UNEXCUSED status. Credit denied in this manner is not eligible for an attendance contract and must be retaken.
